How Much Power Does an Air Conditioner Use?

sdlindsey

Your air conditioning system can be a real power hog, especially in the hot summer months. You may be wondering just how much electricity your AC is using and what you can do to mitigate the costs.

The exact wattage that your AC is using can be difficult to determine. It’s not a simple thing to measure, and it depends on many factors, such as its size, age, and manufacturer, as well as the conditions in your home.

Average Energy Use

Here are the average numbers for air conditioning unit wattage:

  • Mini window unit: 500 watts
  • Medium window unit: 900 watts
  • Largest window units: 1440 watts
  • Central air conditioning: 3500 watts
  • Central air conditioner (fan only, no compressor): 750 watts

Of course, these are only averages – the power usage of your air conditioner depends on how big it is and how efficiently it’s working.

What Affects Your AC Electricity Use

First of all, the size and power of your AC unit will affect how much electricity it uses. Obviously, a bigger unit will draw more power. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that a smaller unit will save you money. If your unit is too small for the space you’re trying to cool, then it will have to work harder for longer. The most efficient air conditioner is the one that’s the right size for the job. If you’re considering installing or upgrading an AC system, you should start by consulting a professional for an evaluation of your home’s AC needs.

But even at the same size, some units are more efficient than others. Check your unit’s SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating. Also, look for an Energy Star rating – an Energy Star-certified AC unit will use power much more efficiently and generate a lower electricity bill. In a state that has hot summers like Utah, that can result in big savings.
